Julia Wolfe never thought she’d write an oratorio about women’s suffrage. In fact, when she first considered it, she found the subject daunting.“It’s such a long history, such a big story,” Wolfe said in a recent phone call from New York.A few years back, though, she was asked to compose a new piece on the subject — and suddenly knew that she wanted to do it.Now “Her Story,” Wolfe’s 40-minute work for orchestra and women’s chorus, comes to the Bay Area. Composed on commission for the San Francisco Symphony and four additional orchestras, the work, which has been performed in Nashville, Chicago, and Boston, makes its West Coast premiere on a San Francisco Symphony program May 25 and 27, conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero and featuring the Boston-based women’s chamber chorus Lorelei Ensemble. The program also includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.”Composer Julia Wolfe’s oratorio, “Her Story,” is inspired by the women’s suffragette movement. By Jennifer Sinco Kelleher | Associated PressHONOLULU — President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration as an intensifying Super Typhoon Mawar approached Guam, where anyone not living in a concrete house was urged to seek safety elsewhere and emergency shelters began to fill ahead of what could be the most powerful storm to hit the U.S. Pacific territory in two decades.Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said on social media that the declaration will support the mobilization of resources into Guam, which is “especially crucial given our distance from the continental U.S.” Guerrero ordered residents of coastal, low-lying and flood-prone areas of the territory of over 150,000 people to evacuate to higher elevations.Federal assistance will be needed to save lives and property and “mitigate the effects of this imminent catastrophe,” Guerrero said in a letter to the president requesting a “pre-landfall emergency” for Guam. By Michael R. Sisak | Associated PressNEW YORK — A recent $5 million defamation verdict hasn’t kept Donald Trump quiet. Will a stern warning from the judge in his Manhattan criminal case? That’s the question looming over a hybrid hearing Tuesday where the former president is set to be instructed on new rules barring him from using evidence in the hush-money case to attack witnesses who could testify against him.Trump won’t have to show up to court for the afternoon hearing at a Manhattan courthouse, avoiding the mammoth security and logistical challenges that accompanied his arraignment last month.Instead, the Republican will be connected by video conference, with his face beamed onto courtroom TV monitors. His lawyers and prosecutors must still appear in person. The hearing comes a day after the plaintiff in the defamation case, writer E. SAN FRANCISCO — Warriors center Kevon Looney hasn’t made a 3-point shot in three years. He has tried only twice. Even a mid-range jumper from the big man is seen as a surprise. But that doesn’t mean Looney can’t shoot. As the Warriors look to retool following a disappointing postseason, is it possible that Looney could take on an expanded role in the Warriors’ offense next season?“There’s still a lot I can do with the ball, shooting, a lot of things,” Looney said recently. “It depends what’s called for.”Larry Harris, the longtime Warriors’ assistant GM and former GM of the Milwaukee Bucks, remembers seeing tape of Looney in high school. Before Looney became a 6-foot-9 center capable of boxing out some of the strongest big men in the league, he was a skinny, 6-foot-9 guard who scored 45 points in his final game for Milwaukee Hamilton High.Harris can easily envision Looney one day becoming a guy who doesn’t just get rebounds and dish the ball back to the perimete...Crash involving Tesla creates traffic nightmare on 101 in Mountain View
